You need a retail CD rather than one of the 'Restore' ones that came
with the computer. If you have one of those it will not give the
messages mentioned below, but ask you if you want to restore the machine
to its original state: if it does that, stop at once.

You need to hit whatever key at Power on leads into the BIOS setup. As
often as not this is DEL: there will usually be a message 'Hit x to
enter setup'. In that, depending on the machine either

there will be an explicit Boot page - get to it with the right arrow
key, and there select the CD drive with the down arrow and use the
number pad + to push it to the top

or there will be an item on BIOS Setup page 'Boot order'; use the PageDn
key to cycle this round to be CDRom; C:

Either way hit ESC and then Exit - Saving settings (have the CD in the
drive ready). On it restarting there should be a message 'Hit any key
to boot from CD', so hit a key

Choose the option to 'Install Windows now' (do not take 'Repair' at this
stage), then after accepting the license agreement with F8 take 'Repair
Installation'.

On any reboot during the process do *not* hit a key to boot CD, it will
wait a few moments then boot from the hard disk

This will retain your existing software installations and most
settings. But Updates will have to be run again, especially SP1 unless
the CD includes it.

It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

Always back up essential data before doing any major system operation
like this, if you are still in a position to do so, just in case. And
once you have done, go back to the BIOS setup and put the hard drive C:
back first in the boot order.
