Windows XP logging off immediately after start up

I too am having the same problem on my son's machine
(running XP Home edition). What I have been able to find
out is that several folks recommend booting off the
original MS XP Home CD and choosing (R)epair. However
this did not work for us. After selecting "R" for repair,
the machine came to a DOS Prompt that allowed us to do
very little. Is the any MS Professional out there that
can help. I would rather not reformat/reinstall this
machine.
