It sounds like you have purchased the "Full" version on Windows XP Home
edition
XP full will not upgrade your current version of windows it will
instead remove Windows 98 and install XP fresh. That means you will
have to re-install all of your software and settings after install
unless you attempt to use the Files and Settings Transfer wizard.
If you want to upgrade your install of Windows 98 you need to purchase
Windows XP Home edition upgrade rather than full.
