I'm working on my father-in-laws laptop. The modem dials, but cannot connect to anything. I get the "please check the number and try again" message. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the modem, updated the drivers, tried every possible speed, tried modifying the initialization command and it just wont connect. I tried using HyperTerminal as well. Here's the kicker: if I pick up a phone and get a dial tone-then sign on using his dial up it connects and works fine! I like to think I know my way around pc as it's what I do for a living, but this one got me stumped!!!! Need a fix!!!Rebuilding the machine is an acceptable option, but now it's just a matter of pride, you know?
