This happened to me yesterday. I found the notepad.BAK file in system32, found the place notepad.exe should go by looking at the shortcut, then used copy to folder to put it where the shortcut said it should be. I renamed the notepad.exe, clicked on the shortcut and up popped notepad.

My problem was caused by Cool Web Search, it is a slippery devil to deal with. Keeps changing its name, but always with .exe
