The improved functionality and stability of Windows XP is well worth the
upgrade. As for not getting many viruses and spyware attacks. Almost all
of these are designed to attack both Windows XP and Windows 9X. There
are some that exploit only known problems in XP, but if you stay current
with the updates, you should be fine. The problem is that almost all of
the big viruses and security problems had a patch available, just nobody
installed the patch until they started having problems.
Also, if you are concerned about getting viri and such before you get a
chance to get it up to date, you can request the security updates on CD
from MS and you can update it before you connect to the internet. It is
best to have a good virus scanner and firewall installed before you
connect to the internet anyways. And most XP CD's are now patched with
SP1, and soon will be patched with SP2. That is another huge, and I
mean HUGE, update that will fix a lot of problems
