I am following this thread with interest because I have
almost the exact same problem... I tried to install a
critical update packet thing and now my computer won't
start up. It goes into an endless loop of crashing and
trying to start. yes I tried f8 and "last known good
configuraton" and they all do the same thing. One of the
options under f8 does something a little different -
directory repair mode?
checking file system on D:
volume is clean
checking file system on E:
volume is clean
checking file system on C:
volume is clean
windows has finished checking the disk

...then it crashes and goes into the endless loop.

It may help to know that the computer in question is a
japanese sony vaio with japanese xp installed alongside
the english version (when I bought it I had the seller
install the english xp and he also partitioned the hard
drive... I don't fully understand it but I have had a C
drive and a D drive in the english xp. The D had been
close to full when I tried to install the update.

None of my pictures of my daughter are backed up - I
stand to lose 2 years of her pictures - today is her 3d
birthday.

I'm grateful for any help!
