Hi,

The "access denied" is a permissions issue, however resolving that (it's not
too difficult) will not allow you to run the programs. They would need to be
installed under the new instance of WinXP in order to be run. Only
installing creates necessary registry entries and places needed files in the
system folders.

What you *can* do is copy off files you created. To do so, you need to take
ownership. Right-click the folder containing the files, select properties.
Go to the security tab and click advanced. You can take control of the
folders on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP Pro
system, you must disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder
options/view tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and
logon as administrator. More details here:

drive. the system will not boot off of the old drive. i understand what's
going on there, i believe (authentication: the new hardware changed too
much). my problem is that on the old drive (c:) i have data and programs
that i need access to. i have some programs that are no longeg made, but
they created and saved files. it would be nice if i could run those
programs and save the files as text, pdf, whatever files. i loaded xp home
on (f:), the new drive, and i can see the old files. if i try to run the
programs i get "access denied ..."

"access denied ..." message. i changed the priviledges for the whole drive.
am i on the right track? is there an easy way to get the programs and files
back. will a password recovery program solve my problem?
