Thanks Kelly. Wondering if the Load Hive method can be used to modify the HKLM part?
ET Sherman:
In case your system is a victim of this wsaupdater.exe issue & Ad-Aware or any other scanner had erased this file (while the userinit key still points to the missing wsaupdater.exe file), you may try creating a copy of Userinit.exe (copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe) from Recovery Console.
Description of Rec.Console: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314058
If the Userinit value is blank (neither has userinit.exe, or wsaupdater.exe, value set), this procedure won't work. Your option is to alter the key from a network or use the procedure suggested by Kelly (if it's possible to alter the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE area using Load Hive).
Final option, consider repairing XP: http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Hi, A User Logon Request Is Rejected Without Any Messages http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322 Ramesh offered a suggestion, that hasn't been verified as of yet: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon. In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read: C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe, However, in order to check this, you will need to slave your hard drive to another system, then modify your hive. >From an account with Administrator level access 1) Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT 2) In Regedit, highlight the HKEY_USERS key and go to File, Load Hive. 3) Use the File Open dialog to go to the Documents and Settings\<username> folder, where <username> is the account you wish to modify. 4) Highlight the NTUSER.DAT file in this folder (usually a hidden file) and select Open. 5) You'll be prompted to enter a "Key name". You can use whatever you wish, but I use the User's logon name. 6) You can now expand the Hive you just loaded and make any needed changes. 7) When finished, highlight this Hive again and go to File, Unload Hive. NOTE: You MUST unload the Hive prior to logging on to the users account. Otherwise XP may have trouble loading the user's profile. Other than the above, if Windows is installed on C:\, I have an automated edit on line 255 (right hand side) ignore the name: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm -- All the Best, Kelly Microsoft-MVP Windows® XP 2004 Windows MVP "Winny" Award Troubleshooting Windows XP http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm "ET Sherman" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1e96201c455bd$32ce7e70$a101280a@phx.gbl... >I have Windows XP Home edition and today it started > rejecting ALL User Logon's without any messages.
