Found this fix in one of the newsgroups--give it a try

Wow, there was some kind of virus that renamed the original notepad.exe file
to notpad.exe and added another one called notpad.exe so that when you tried
to run it it wouldn't work O_o interesting virus. I found that it has
Adware-XPlugin.ddr

How I Fixed It?

Deleted notpad.exe and notepad.exe from system32 folder used the copy that
is in /windows folder which didn't have virus and copied it into system32
and now it works correctly, sweet.

Hope this helps
