Ending process on msimn.exe would shut down Outlook Express. This has
nothing to do with the messenger service(or windows messenger for that
matter). Closing outlook express does nothing to the messenger service, it
simply closes outlook express. If you re-open outlook express the msimn.exe
comes back. Not sure what your thinking here, but ending process on
msimn.exe is not needed and has nothing to do with the messenger service.
Same with msmsgs. This closes windows messenger, which has nothing to do
with the messenger service. Ending process on msmsgs.exe does nothing except
close windows messenger, which as soon as you reboot would come right back,
unless you uninstall windows messenger or set it to not start at windows
startup.
To stop popup ads that come thru the messenger service(not woindows
messenger, not outlook express), the ONLY correct answer is to enable a
firewall. Disabling the messenger service is a good idea ONLY AFTER you tell
them to install and enable a firewall. Telling someone to disable the
service and not tell them to install a firewall is just plain bad advice.
Please don't post bad and potentially dangerous advice. It only confuses
users. Enabling a firewall is the correct answer, disabling the messenger
serivce can be an added security precaution, but disabling is not needed at
all if you have a firewall and the serivice can't be exploited if you have a
firewall up and running.
