Just my nickel on this topic . . .
I don't use My Documents because I want to choose where I want to put
things. I create folder (directory) named UserData, where user is the user's
name. Under this, I have subdirectories for each application I work with.
Wach application is configured to use this as the default folder.

Not everyone organizes the same way, and not every project I work on, fits
this scheme. I also have created subdirectories in UserData called ProjName,
where ProjName is a patricular project I'm working on, i.e "KitchenRemodel".
I will place any item associated with this project here, such as a PDF
catalog of flooring or stoves, a spread*** of costs, faxes from the
acrhitect, etc.

It may sound confusing, but it is the way I associate. If it's not a major
project, I file by creating application and if it is a major project, I file
it under that. If there is enough to warrant sub catagorization under the
project, I do that to. Again, not everyone organizes the same way. I agree,
though, I hate the MyDocuments approach as it reminds me of the show box
filing system: It's all in one place, but there is no order to it.
