Instead of installing the patch over the web download it and save it
to your hard drive.
Then shutdown and restart the computer and boot it into Safe Mode.
When it finishes booting into Safe Mode install the patch by
double-clicking on the saved patch download in Windows Explorer.
Also while in Safe Mode open Control Panel - Network connections.
Right-click on the icon for your Internet connection and select
Properties.
Go to the More Options tab and click on the checkbox to activate the
Windows XP built-in firewall.
Then shut down and restart normally.
When it has finished booting up immediately get the lastest updates
for your antivirus software and do a complete scan of your hard drive.
Or you can download Stinger (free) from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger
and run it to clean up the system.
