Before starting out I would get the major XP upgrades on a free CD -
order it from
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
Also, optionally download and have on a disk handy the patch for the
Sasser worm - download at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;835732

and Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

Then start from your existing system, with no Internet connection, and
run the XP Upgrade CD to Install, continuing with upgrade. Do not
bother about updates to the setup, and do not do the activation yet.

Any conflicts will be shown up at the beginning of installation - there
will not be much usually. The upgrade replaces the system almost
entirely, so ME bugs don't matter, as long as it is holding together
well enough to get the XP Setup started

Once it is running, run that CD to upgrade to XP SP1, and do the
security updates on it (don't bother with the WMP or Direct X additions
as yet). Install your Zone Alarm. And run the Sasser patch now so as to
have double protection, it and ZA. Only now set up the DSL connection.
You will then be safe to go get any other updates on line (there won't
be many), and in due course get on the net and run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows to
activate the system
