Save it as a bmp file. You must change the color of the upper left pixel to a colour you are not using (that colour becomes a black background, experiment). If using dialogs to assign icons they generally require files to be called an icon file and won't look for bmp files (though both are valid icon files, an ico file is a file with multiple bmp in it). So rename the bmp file to ico so dialogs will find it - windows doesn't care about the extension it'self.

Hi Kelly, Thanks for your reply. The picture that I would like to convert to an icon is in my "Pictures" folder and has a .jpg extension, evidently. How do I change the extension? Do I need to move it somewhere to alter the extension? If so, where? And how? I am new at this, so detailed guidance is appreciated. Thank you.
