Thanks for your reply! The info you provided contains a quick fix for my
problem.

I will post again to find a solution to the root of my problem.

I upgraded my HD and cloned my partitions onto the new drive. After
removing the old drive my boot, Win XP reassigned my boot partition (ie.
H\:) and no C:\. I have not been able to find a way to change the boot
partition to be C: (other than by using the logical solution described in
your post using subst).

For background:

My old drive was configured to dual boot to win 98; so there were several
partitions. After cloning, I started the PC and into XP. (!mistake!) XP
assigned drive letters to the new drive as usually (h, i, j ...) .
Afterwards I removed the old drive. XP did not reorganize the drive letters
when the lower letters (c, d, e) were removed. I was able to manually
reassign drive letter for all except the current boot partition.
