Rarely. If they get things into a total tangle, or decide that they
want to throw out most things they have installed and the easiest way is
to start over clean. Unfortunately one or two recent worm attacks get
so pervasive that the safest way is to start clean.

That presupposes that they have made one. Few people coming here asking
for that sort of advice have even thought of it. I keep a tight
system's partition and image backup - and go back quite often after
doing say a Beta test upgrade install. I have not had to do a format
and clean install, other than in such testing, since I installed Windows
ME in 2000. And that includes a complete hardware rebuild
