lost files upgrading from 98 to xp please help

I have tried the tips in http://support.microsoft.com/?
kbid=313055 but cannot find anything they are talking
about there. can anyone tell me how toi get back my
documents mainly. and maybe my email etc. there has to be
a way upgrading from 98 to xp can't totally lose your
files they have to be a way to restore them please help
