That link isn't any help - it talks about the line 472
error, and the fix for that requires getting to the
desktop. With the line 422 error, you don't get that far,
even in safe mode. There are some folks reporting the 422
error on the net, but no one is posting what it means or
how to fix it.
We have a customer's xp home sp1 that had been running
fine until it was allowed to sit for a while, during which
time it rebooted, so I suspect that it might have been
infected with Sasser or Blaster - it is on DSL internet.
Since the h/d is NTFS, I can't run a dos level virus scan
and Norton does not have a solution for command line
scanning of NTFS volumes.
This system has several user accounts, and now the line
422 error occurs when trying to logon with any of them,
including Administrator in safe mode. VGA mode gets the
same result. After acknowledging the error, it goes back
to the logon screen.
We've tried the repair re-install with no help, and per
the fix for line 472 error, I've gone into recovery
console to look at the directory structure under
\windows\resources\themes and verified that it looks the
same as my bench machine, which is running a default theme.
Anybody out there in Microsoft land know what the error
means? There is no mention of it in the MS KB. If I knew
what the error meant, I might be able to fix it without
doing an in-place reinstall and blowing away the customers
settings/programs.
