If by 'protected' the OP meant 'encrypted' then, unless he backed up the
encryption key, his stuff is as good as gone. Windows XP generates a new key
every time it's reinstalled and, unless he pays a data recovery company
£1000s, he will never recover his stuff.
You cannot simply take ownership of an encrypted file.
