Reinstall XP

OK, I understand. The first thing I would do (assuming
you have the WinXP retail or OEM disc and not a restore
disc) is go to Device Manager and make a note of all of
the hardware so in case Windows doesn't install something
right at least you know what driver you need. Also save
anything that's important - documents, email, address
book, favorites, quicken data, etc. - stuff you have
created. Save to a floppy disk or a flash drive (USB). Set
the BIOS to boot from the CD, put the Win disc in and
restart. (You said you had already set the BIOS to boot
from the CD I think). You may have to press a key to
verify that you want to boot from the CD at boot-time. Do
so. The install program will load a bunch of drivers.
Windows will tell you that there's an OS already on the
hard drive, do you want to overwrite it. Say yes. Leave
the file structure as-is (either NTFS or FAT32, probably
NTFS). It will take off, you'll have to answer a few
questions, no big deal. However . . . I would get someone
who has done this before (brother-in-law, neighbor,
friend) to work with me if I were you. It's kinda like
delivering a baby - 90% of the time it's pretty simple and
you don't have to do much, 10% of the time things can go
south in a hurry if you're not prepared . . . Good Luck !
