If the problem began today: Did you install anything new? Did you update
Windows XP? Have you scanned for viruses/adware/malware? If none of the
above pertain:

The quick fix is to use System Restore (Start
     Button/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore),
Select the option to: Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time,
and then click the NEXT button. That next screen, will be divided into
two
panes, the left pane where the calendar is, and the right pane with the
Restore Points list. On the calendar, the dates with BOLD numbers are
the
ones that contain System Restore Points. Click on a Bold date as close
to,
but PRIOR to, when the problem began. In the right pane you will see
one or
more Restore Points for that selected date. Select a Restore Point by
clicking on it to highlight it. Then click the NEXT button, the
Confirm
screen will open, click the NEXT button, and the system will restore
from
the Restore Point which you selected. When the system restarts, it
will
boot slower that first time, because it will be changing the system
settings
back to the Restore Point that you chose. Hopefully the problem will
then
be fixed. Any software or Updates installed between the date of the
Restore
Point that you choose, and today, will have to be reinstalled.
