unable to copy files

I am unable to copy files between folders for installation
that have been downloaded from the net.

I receive the following error;

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Error signature

AppName: explorer.exe Appver: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName:
mfc42.dll
ModVer:6.0.8665.0 Offset:0005e3d6

When I close the error my taskbar and icons disapear
momentarily then reapear.
