If XP is in fat32 and the virus is in the boot sector a format will not
kill it anyway. As you know, it's rarely the case that a silly virus or
trojan requires a format to get rid of it and/or repair the damage it's
done. Quite often, if a virus/trojan has been removed you're just left
with registry calls [error messages] to non-existant virus files which
are easy to fix by deleting the keys that used to call the bugger
assuming the calls aren't to real windows files that a substandard
anti-virus deleted instead of cleaning. On the other hand yeah,
sometimes they do so much damage it's the only recourse. Depends on the
nasty really.
On the other, other hand, if a virus/trojan replaces a windows file and
your anti-virus deleted it, as it should, now your left with finding and
replacing the standard windows file. It's not an easy science. I always
go with prevention methods/routines rather then deal with cleanup.
