Missing File

I woke up this morning, turned on my computer and lo and
behold the daggum thing wouldn't boot. All I got was a
DOS screen saying the windows\system32\config\sytem file
was missing or corrupted.

I reloaded XP onto another partition and tried copying
and pasting that file to my original install but it
didn't work. It said that "file was currently in use".
PLEASE HELP!!!
