Chkdsk /f won't run in Windows (or at a command prompt) if C: is the system
disk. It will need to be performed at next boot. There are 5 phases of
checking with the /f switch and only 3 with regular chkdsk (doesn't repair
the disk). Check the Event Viewer/Application under WinLogon source to see
results of the chkdsk when the system reboots.

Which processes in Task manager are using the CPU?, and are they connecting
to the internet.
Is everything working in Device manager. What you describe could be hardware
related.
I recently received a virus/trojan courtesy of the messenger service that
the Trend online scanner didn't pick up, and neither did several other
scanners.
I was suspicious about the message that I recieved and also I noticed there
was internet activity when I wasn't using internet programs.
