I am having problems with my machine (WinXP Pro+SP1) and have tried to run
"chkdsk" to diagnose the trouble I am having. If I enter "chkdsk /f" in the
run box the program runs in a dos box. If I enter the same when in "safe
mode" a dos box opens with the message to the effect that "chkdsk" will run
at next boot up which is the message I would expect when in "normal" mode.
Further, if I enter "chkdsk c: \f" in the run box when in normal mode the
program does not respond.

I have run sfc \scannow in an attempt to "fix" the problem.

With regards to the problem I am having, the machine has begun to "lockup"
which requires a cold reboot to fix. A further problem is while using a
program (any program) I am unable to access the menu is the menu bar.
Clicking on any of the menus does nothing, no drop down of the menu bar.
Closing the program and restarting does not help and the same problem exists
if I open another program. I need to cold boot to fix the problem.

What seems to be strange is the CPU usage (task manager) always seems to be
about 25% even without any input by me into the machine i.e. I can leave the
machine idle for 5-10 minutes and Task Manager will still show 25% CPU
usage.

I have scanned for viruses using my resident AV program (NOD32) and using
the Trend online program. Have defragged (Perfectdisk), run Adaware and
Spybot Search and Destroy and "cleaned" the Registry using System Mechanic.

Any suggestions?
