Robert,

It first suspect that your ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupted. This is actually
the boot screen you see after the bios displays. This splash screen covers
up the listing of all the .dll files, etc which are loading in the
background. When the ntoskrnl.exe gets corrupted, it may either not display
or won't finish it's execution by switching from its splash screen to
explorer.

If you have another computer running XP Pro (and it runs the splash screen
that came with XP Pro) just copy the file from C:\Windows\system32 onto a
CD-R (the file is too big for a floppy). Using your Win XP Pro installation
disc, you will want to do a system recovery. After windows installation
checks your hardware and loads necessary files in virtual memory, go to
system recovery and it will take you to the command prompt. Once there type
in your administrator password when asked and (assuming your CD drive is D)
take the Windows disc out of the drive and put the CD on which you copied
ntoskrnl.exe. Type the following command: copy D:\ntoskrnl.exe
C:\windows\system32 You will be asked if you want to overwrite the
existing ntoskrnl file. Type Y and enter.

This should do it!
