Computer acting strange?

Last week my dialup icon disappeared from my desktop.
I used the "restore" feature and all was ok for a few days.
Next, part of my iHateSpam program removed itself from
my "Windows Outlook" program. Again, I used the restore
feature and it has been ok. I am running Windows XP Pro
(OEM) and would like to know if I can do a repair install
without losing existing programs or, is this not a good
idea? I have all of the updates for XP installed and am
running Spybot, Ad-aware, and Zone Alarm.
Thank you for your help,
Don
