Office 2000 Running on XP

I have a user who is running Office 2000 on his Windows XP
lap top. It is connected to our server, which is Windows
2000. When he creates a document in word and places it on
the server, when he goes to reopen it, it gives him a read
only error, cannot open. He is the only one with the
document open. He is the one who created it. I haven't
been able to solve this. Any hints.
