Hi

I can see the partial reinstall - "Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT" Those two folders are from the partial reinstall.

Rename boot.ini to boot.001 or what ever. Then open Notepad and type or copy/paste the following:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
 Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

and save that file as boot.ini where the original file was. Reboot your system. This should also stop the partial reinstall. If you have Win 98 installed as well, you will have to edit boot.ini to include that after you have booted back into XP. You can then delete those two folders:

 $WIN_NT$.~BT
 $WIN_NT$.~LS

| Hello Will,
|
| Here is a copy of my boot.ini
|
| [Boot Loader]
| Timeout=5
| Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
| [Operating Systems]
| multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
| Professional" /fastdetect
| C:\="Microsoft Windows"
|
| I might add that I just did a partial re-install of WinXP Pro to rebuild
| this file this morning and to get to XP but it looks no different than what
| it was before....and since I'm still in XP and haven't rebooted I'm not sure
| if I'll get the opportunity to select the OS on startup if I reboot. Would
| it be possible for you to maybe reply to the newsgroup and to my e-mail
| address ... that way if XP doesn't show up as a selection I can still read
| your reply.
|
| Also, while I have your eyes, I have two folders/directories on C drive:
|
| $WIN_NT$.~BT
| $WIN_NT$.~LS
|
| I know that one of them is put there by the install of XP but what is the
| other one and how did it get there?
| .
| Thanks Again--DMB
