Open your control panel and look at the Users applet. How
many users are listed on the computer and are they listed as
Administrator or Limited?

When you set up a password, was that the first user account
you set up? I think you may have been using the default
Administrator account and you created your account, with the
password, as a limited account. If so, you'll have to open
the now hidden Administrator account by rebooting the
computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows loads to get
the boot menu. Then using the Administrator account, open
the control panel and set you user account to have
administrative rights.
Click OK and reboot. Your user account will now do all that
the default admin acct would do.
