Anyway, in parallel with this post, I've Googled "Hide Folders XP", which
revealed a number of hits. I'll test two options among 6 candidates:

1. Hiding files at the filesystem/driver level (but, will this work with an
external hard drive that's been plugged into another computer?)
2. #1 plus encryption (but will the performance be acceptable?)

I haven't found a definitive review of this category of products, so I'm
stuck with testing each one. I'm open to any comments from anyone who has
used such products.

This would be a nice enhancement to the next version of Windows. This
really should be functionality in the O/S itself, not something provided by
3rd party vendors.
