In spite of the fact that the 192.168.n.n address is shown as the IP, the problem is still likely to be in the DSL connection. Since you failed to describe your connection (i.e. direct to modem, ICS, through a router, etc.) it is difficult to tell you where the change in IP occurs, but if the DSL IP or the DNS IP are down when the system is trying to access the Internet, XP would default back to an internal IP and close the Winsock. Given that the IP is a 192.168.n.n number, my guess would be a router or ISC.
