SP1 corrupts system

Hi,

    My old machine crashed. I have a registered copy of XP
Home and XP Pro.
    I formatted the HD on the machine I want to load XP.
It loads fine and I download SP1. After downloading SP1
the computer goes into constant reboot and it runs check
disk continually.
    I have tired "How to recover from a Corrupted Registry
tht prevents XP from Starting" article 307545. No luck.
    Can anyone help me out?
