First, run the (fre) XP Upgrade Advisor, and pay close attention to all
potential problems it lists. Remov/upgrade hardware/software as required.
f possible, add RAM. XP likes a lot more than 98. Consder 256 Meg the
minimum for a happy XP, more if you do a lot of phot editting or want to try
digital movies.
Next, as a mininimum, uninstall all system-level software, other than win98
itself. This means everything by Symantec, McAfee, Roxio, Nero, etc. Remove
these even if you have the XP compatible versions. These are very complex
programs and they load what is required for the current operating system
only. That is likely wrong for XP.
Then run scandisk and let it fix and errors it finds. NEVER attempt a major
upgrade if there are file system errors. That is asking for a disaster.
Next, defrag.
Run scandisk again, just to be sure.
Backup all personal files (DOC, XLS, JPG, etc) somewhere off the computer,
just in case.
Turn the PC off.
Unplug all non-essential peripherals, like scanners, printers, external hard
drivers. Leave the monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached. Speakers are OK,
too. Unplug the phone line and/or higher-speed internet connection.
Put the XP CDROM into the CD reader drive, and turn the PC on. The XP setup
should start, since the XP CDROM is "bootable". You should NOT go into
win98, ever, during this process.
If the PC boots into 98, then you need to reboot and enter the "BIOS setup".
You will need to consult your motherboard manaul, or PC manual, or contact
the PC maker for details. (One often hits DEL or F2 or similar while the
back screen with white writing is present to get into the BIOS setup.
Unfortunately, there are over a dozen different ways to get in, each corect
for a single clsss of PCs. Do NOT experiment. Note that the BIOS setup is
below 98, or even DOS. It allows you to talk directly to the motherboard.
(Be very careful, as a bad choice he can make the PC very hard to fix.) You
want to make the first boot device the CDROM drive.
Reboot.
Once the XP installation begins, accept all the defaults, and prepare to be
bore for about one hour. If the installation fails after many minutes, try
it a second time. BUT, give it at least one hour, prefferably two, before
declaring the installation a failure, unles it gives an obvious erro
message. I upgraded an old Gateway (Pentium class), and it semed to
remember what it had already done.
An alternative to the upgrade is a "clean installation". This can be doen
with the upgrade CDROM, so long as you have a CD for win98, 98SE, or ME,
since it will demand proof of ownership of a qualifying operating system.
95, DOS, win3.1, and NT do not qualify.
WARNING: "clean install" mean ERASE THE WHOLE DISK FIRST, or at least the
partition with win98 on it. Be sure to have all important data backed up
OFF the PC!!!
Once XP is installed, re-install the correct version of Norton or McAffee,
Easy CD or Nero, etc.
If all this frighten you, then get a "geek" friend to help. Or, go to any
PC store; they typically install XP airly cheaply.
Good luck.
