Windows XP Crash

Got up from computer while searching the internet,
returned to a completely black screen, not able to break
out of it, doesn't appear to be on screen saver/suspend
mode, could not recover system on reboot, had to use
windows start up cd, now all programs (software loaded) on
new computer do not function at all each having a corrupt
file. Any suggestions on what caused such a massive crash
of Windows?
