Yes, you can format the D drive by booting the computer using the XP OS CD, then choose to Install Windows by pressing Enter and then choose which partition to install Windows to which would be D in your case and you would have the option to format the selected partition as well, the C partition if you leave it untouched would remain safe, so u need to be careful
