You can unplug it when the machine is off without harm

I find that in XP (but not in earlier windows) that I can unplug mine,
without harm, by simply unplugging it. The system makes its cheerful
little beep in acknowledgment. The 'Safely remove hardware' serves to
ensure that you are not in the middle of transferring data at the time,
but that is usually obvious anyway
