Most laptop computers require specific drivers for their hardware.
(hard drive, CD drive, touchpad, video, sound, power saving features,
etc.)
Proprietary here means that you would have to ensure you could
download all the necessary drivers needed for the hardware that your
laptop has installed. The OEM version of XP Home that came
preinstalled on your laptop included those drivers.
Another consideration is whether or not you would void any warranty
that you have on the machine if you were to install an off the shelf
version of XP Pro.
I considered installing Pro on my Toshiba laptop which is fairly new,
however, there are too many issues with downloading drivers and the
warranty. Purchasing Pro from Toshiba is easier but a lot more
