I've read this post 3 times and I'm still not 100% percent sure what
you're asking, but here's a suggestion:

1) Set the laptop to boot from the floppy and boot with a Win98 floppy.
At the A: prompt, type fdisk to get into the fdisk program. Then type
"fdisk /mbr" without the quotes. Now continue on to install Win98 in
the usual way. If your laptop is one that uses a Restore Disk, be sure
you have your original Restore Disk. Otherwise, be sure you have all
the drivers from your laptop mftr.'s website for Win98 on hand.
