Suggests an infection...

Does she have an up to date AVP. a firewall and anti-spyware?
Can try running to an earlier "system restore point"
But if she has an infection, that probably won't cure it
If a name brand type computer a System Recovery will probably work with out losing data and important setups and things like "address book" etc.

An in-law called (long distance) and said her windows fonts were
unreadable and looked like they had been replaced with gibberish. It
recently happened. She called Dell for help and talked with a nice
Indian gentleman who attempted to fix it but was unsuccessful.

I am still a win98se user so could not help much.

Obviously her windows display font has been corrupted. Icons are fine.
The fonts also display incorrectly in safe mode. Computer boots fine and
everything is in its place.

She has the winxp installation disk but I am not sure if winxp has a
repair mode that you can use instead of a complete reinstall. The
techrep said if she used the disk it would format the drive and she
would lose all her files. That did not sound correct but did sound like
the standard techrep reply (format the drive and re-install), but as I
said, I am a win98se user.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
