Running a scan in DOS for viruses....

I am receiving "mail undeliverable" messages, but I have
never sent messages to the addresses indicated. Actually,
they are coming to an identity in Outlook that I seldom
use.

McAfee tech said I might have a virus in my system and I
should rush a DOS Scan. Told me to start PC in DOS mode.
I went to Advanced Options Menu, and Safe Mode with
Command Prompt is at bottom of screen, but I cannot
select it. The only item highlighted is "MS Windows XP
Home Edition."

Assuming I decide to do this, how do I enter DOS in Safe
Mode?

Any assistance or advice would be appreciated. The reason
I'm hesitating is that he also said that if any system
files are infected and cannot be cleaned, they may be
deleted or renamed without prompting for my permission.
Anyone see the danger here?

Thanks.
