You are a genius. Following my previous reply, my impatience took hold of
me and I ran the 2 scripts you suggested. I then repeated the acid test
(crashing explorer) and by golly, this time more icons came back. Two that
did not are:

1. the icon for Paul Beuger's "TypeItIn" even though task Manager shows it
to be still running. I have to use the task Manager to close it and restart
it after which it appears.

2. the icon for Dale Nurden's TClockEx - which as it turns out is no longer
running and needs to be restarted manually.
