Thanks but unfortunately, the tips in the above link couldn't solve my
problem. However, the good news is that I've discovered the source of
my problem.
I've wanted to have auto login and so I had used the TweakUI for XP to
set it. I checked the "Log on automatically at system startup" box and
for the "set password" dialog box I just left them blank and clicked
on "okay."
After that when windows restart, it auto logins all right but as it
loads the personal settings it tries to access the floppy drive too
(thus creating the sound) before finally loggin in.
I also discovered that if I set a password in the "set password"
dialog box mentioned above, the startup process would just freeze at
the "loading personal settings" stage with a message "Windows is
starting up." I then have to restart windows and with the reset button
and the press on shift key to undo the auto login before I can get
into windows again.
Strange, isn't it?
Pete
