: Two ways. You can go to Windows Update and on the left take 'Windows
: Update Catalog' (you may need to check it in 'personalise update'
: first). Then go to Updates for Operating systems, select Windows XP SP1
: (get SP1 separately, see below) and you get to a panel where you can
: put critical updates in a download basket to download and save.
:
: Or when you get an update in the ordinary way, clear Temporary Internet
: files first (for convenience) and when it comes to the point of install,
: copy the downloaded .exe file out of there. That is the way for
: 'non-critical' ones
:
: For SP1 either go to
:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.as
p
: and get the complete 130 MB 'Network' download, or go to
: http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp
: and order that on CD for free - you will have a delay for delivery, but
: it includes all security updates to February, as well, I'm told, as SP1

I used the Temp Int files method to copy the critical updates I had
downloaded previously to a new folder for future burn to CD. Slick! This
seems to work well for me and is quick and easy. They all seem to be the
correct sizes.
But a few clarifications, please:
There is no time between the completion of the download and the start of the
installation when you are doing an automatic update in XP Home, so I don't
see the opportunity of copying them "at the point of install". Does this
make any difference?

"That is the way for 'non critical' ones" leads me to think that there may
be a problem with the way I am doing this with the critical ones. Is there a
problem?

When I copy the files a [1] is appended to the end of the string and before
the .exe. I just backspace these out. Probs?

I assume that when and if it comes time to reinstall these updates I would
just double click on the .exe file from whatever folder they are in to start
the installation, correct?

Thanks for your time.
