The conclusion was reached from your description of the problem and from
what you said you did to test. Again, diagnosing subtle
hardware-related issues in Usenet postings is not the best medium.

If everything worked two days ago and you have:
1) checked that the phone line is working
2) changed the flat ribbon cable you are using to connect from the modem
to the phone line with no difference
3) Possibly tried to connect with the same cable and phone line with
another machine (perhaps a friend's if you don't have a second
computer)
4) the machine is spyware and virus free and the operating system is
properly patched
5) the only difference is that you have upgraded from HE to Pro
6) installed the correct drivers
Then try completely uninstalling/removing the modem from the operating
system. Uninstall and reinstall dial-up networking. Then allow the
system to find the modem again and be sure the drivers installed are
the correct ones.

I have no idea what the above sentence is supposed to mean. Since you
haven't ever said (to my recollection, which may be faulty) what the
make and model of the laptop is, or any details about its age, etc., I
can't comment on whether or not calling tech support will be fruitful
for you. However, since laptops have proprietary hardware and usually
have additional proprietary software, it is logical to consult the
laptop mftr. for drivers, troubleshooting, known issues, about their
products.

I'm also not sure what the above sentence is supposed to mean, and
frankly I find that I'm rather insulted by it. Read my headers if you
really think Mr. Gates loves me.

You're welcome. Since you've made it clear you would rather not have me
stop by again, I'm happy to oblige.
Good luck to you.
