XP Network connection Wizard

Hi,

I have been using a Netgear 824 Router/Switch with just a sole PC for a year
but have finally got round to adding a Notebook, both using XP. Surprisingly
both wired and PC card-wireless connections worked straight away using there
own direct connections to the net via the router.

I then wanted to be able to use upstairs main PC printer from the notebook
so tried to setup a network using XP Wizard 'Setup Home Network'.

I tried 2nd option of wiazrd 'computer connects to net through another
computer OR THROUGH A RESIDENTIAL gateway' as I thought the Netgear 824 was
a Gateway? This set up Bridges on both computers but didnt allow shared
files to be seen. I assumed I didnt need bridges for my direct net
connection?

I then tried 'Other' setting and 'This computer connects to net directly or
through a network hub (which I also thought router was!). Other computers on
network also connect directly or through hub'. This again didnt appear to
work and gave warning that this is not the preferred way of connection. Why
is it better to go through another PC? Wouldnt that computer have to be on
all the time, which would be inconvenient if I just wanted to quickly use
the laptop?

Phoned Netgear who couldnt help on Windows connection settings (helpful
advice from India!) but showed connections working by a PING test. After I
put phone down, I realised that in fact the network was now available on
both computers, the only change I made was turning off Norton AV and
Firewall for the ping tests.

So!, am I now on the correct network setting with 'Other/Direct through
hub' even though I got the warning that this is not the best way to connect?

Can I manually check (without re-setting up through Wizard) which options on
both computers I am using. (got a feeling I only altered main PC away from
Residential Gateway connection - however all bridges have gone on notebook
as well)?

Is it usual for both PC and notebook to require Norton AV/Firewall off
before File/Printer sharing?

Although I have things working finally, an understanding of this, and
confirmation I have setup correctly, would be most appreciated.
