Hello All,
I've been having trouble getting my new Camcorder to work with Windows XP.
Whether I try using the USB connection or the Firewire connection, I get the
same problem:
1. The system detects the new device and begins installing the drivers.
2. The driver installation fails with the same message "The data is invalid."

Initially, I thought that this was a problem with the lack of drivers being
supplied by Sony. But the drivers that are failing installation are (I believe)
native Windows drivers: ("AV/C Subunit" in the case of Firewire connection
between the camera and the computer).

I have this same problem on my laptop or my desktop. Both machines are running
Windows XP Pro service pack 1.

I've come across several posts and articles that mention similar problems with
various devices that try to use native Windows XP drivers (Driver installation
fails with the "Data is invalid" message).

There are some solutions for this error. Here's a link to one case and solutoin:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810509
Unfortunately, this didn't help me.

In general, I've been able to determine that the problems lies with rights to
the registry. But I don't seem able to get the rights set correctly. I'm logged
in as a user with admin rights when I'm doing this install. Do I need to be
logged in explcitly as the Administrator?

Can anyone direct me to some good instructions on how to make sure that my
rights are sufficient to get my camera's drivers installed?

TIA,

-tomas vera
