Remote proceedure call terminated unexpectedly

Troubleshooting for a friend who reinstalled XP Home on
his computer and now when the Logon screen appears and
when he chooses the user name the desktop loads, BUT, a
window then opens telling him to save all work, etc.,
with a message that states :

"Windows must restart because the Remote Proceedure Call
(RPC)Service terminated unexpectedly."

This is displayed for aprox. 60 seconds, then his
computer reboots and the cycle continues endlessly. Short
of formatting his drive and re-installing XP a 2nd time,
is there a way to solve this.
